Open Source Software
What is open source software and why do I care?Open source software is a type of software that can be used for free. It can also be modified (for those expert programmers out there) as long as it is not then turned around and sold. Unlike for profit company's that lock down their software with strict software licenses, Open Source software uses the General Public License (GPL) that says you can use it however you want for free as long as you don't turn around and try to make a profit by selling the software to someone else.
Who would take the time to build
this software and then not try and make a profit on it?
There is a community of computer professionals out there that believe information should be freely exchanged for the purpose of advancement. These professionals make money based on donations given to them by grateful users. This is why open source software exists, and why it is free for you to use.
